I can't tell you why I am obsessed with all things oranges, but what I can tell you, is that I love them in all forms. From my taper candle holders, to hand-felted sweaters, my orange obsession has filled every aspect of my crafting life.

I used to love candles in an ordinary way, a scent for the season, and maybe one or two around my apartment. Then, living in Quechee, my roommate and dear friend, taught me that I was not appreciating candles to my full potential. Within weeks our apartment was filled candles and became, perhaps, a fire hazard. Imagine watching Practical Magic, while the tv is surrounded and adorned with 10 pillar candles or playing (rather poorly) the ukulele by candlelight. It just adds a little magic to everyday life.

After saving hundreds...thousands of candleholder inspiration screenshots to my phone, I knew it was time to make one for my space. I love pieces that not only look and feel handmade, but I appreciate forms that are organic in shape and texture. 

Now for the nitty gritty of how this piece takes shape!

How It's Made - Bringing the Candle Holder to Life

Step 1:

I consider step one to be choosing the materials. In pottery there are so many different clay bodies, that it can feel overwhelming to decide what grog level, color, or type to use. Once you know the cone you fire to, you can narrow down your clay choices significantly.

I love a clay body that has a toasted color to it with specks throughout, that pairs beautifully with my underglaze.

Step 2:

Time to throw! I make the part that holds the candle on the wheel. In order for the clay to dry enough to attach, I will normally throw this piece that night before I plan on creating the rest of the form.

Step 3:

Roll out your slabs! This can either be done on a slab roller or with a rolling pin. Most important part here, is that you don't want to lift or move your slab too much. This will cause it to warp and your piece won't lay flat when hanging. 

Step 4:

Cut out your shape for the back of your piece and any additional attachments (like the match holder).

Step 5:

Time to attach! I like to plan out where my sections will lay, and then I mark, score, and then attach my pieces to my slab and do any clean up.

Step 6:

Let the piece dry a little before painting. Now, using your underglaze of choice, it's time paint!

Step 7:

Let your piece dry completely. Time for the kiln! Once out of the kiln, apply glaze where desired and glaze fire.

Step 8:

Check your candle fit!

Step 9:

When hanging your piece, use a non-flammable wall hanging option, and never leave lit candles unattended.
